18/10/2013 - Czech-Philippines Relations at 40: Unique History, Promising Future

On October 18th, 2013 the Department of Asian Studies at Metropolitan University in co-operation with the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Prague hosted an international seminar to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and the Philippines. The seminar entitled “Czech-Philippine Relations at 40 – Unique History, Promising Future” highlighted the unique historical connections of the two countries and examined the perspectives of mutual ties and future prospects in various fields ranging from culture and education to economy.

Dr. Stanislav Slavický, former ambassador to the Philippines, explained the unique aspects of relations between the Czech Republic and the Philippines. Dr. Helena Stejskalová, historian from the Museum of České Budějovice, further elaborated on Ferdinand Blumentritt and the first Czech Jesuits in the Philippines. To stress the importance of mutual economic relations, Dr. Lilia de Lima, Director-General of PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority), explained about the opportunities for Czech investors in the Philippine Economic Zones. The seminar was concluded by Honorary Consul General Břetislav Skácel who analyzed the Czech perspectives on doing business in the Philippines.
